2020 Ford F-150 Continues To Dominate

2020 Ford F-150 Continues To Dominate

With years of being the best selling automotive machine in the industry, by a huge margin, the Ford F-150 continues to dominate. While the 2020 Ford F-150 is seen as more of a slight maintenance year when compared to the 2019 model year, this beautiful and powerful hunk of aluminum doesn’t disappoint. When you step into the 2020 Ford F Series truck, it becomes abundantly clear how Ford has been able to maintain such a loyal customer base and move over 750,000 units consistently for the last 6 to 7 years.

Ford offers 7 variants of the F-150, the XL, XLT, LARIAT, KING RANCH, PLATINUM, LIMITED, and the off-road monster that is the RAPTOR. There is a Ford F-150 for all budgets and 6 engines all with a 10-speed automatic transmission to choose from. From the best in class towing, old faithful, 5.0L V8 to the 2.7L EcoBoost V6, Ford offers everything you can want from a truck.

Most pickup trucks today have steered away from being simple work vehicles and are now over-sized luxury cruisers. The F-150 SuperCrew is a spacious family mover and you’ll be glad to know this is the last year for the current F-150 design. There are pickup trucks that have been redesigned and provide levels of luxury above what Ford currently offers, the 2020 Ford F-150 isn’t far behind.

The Ford F-150 has maintained its 13th generation truck since the release of the 2015 model year. It has maintained itself very well for the last few years which speaks to why it continues to be the best selling vehicle in the US. Have I mentioned it’s extremely reliable?!

New for the 2020 Ford F-150 is that advanced driving technology features are optioned into your vehicle through packages. Some are standard on the LARIAT, KING RANCH, RAPTOR, AND PLATINUM. While other features are standard only on the LIMITED. Features like pre-collision assist, auto start/stop engine, curve control, review camera with dynamic hitch assist all come standard on the F-150.

For features like lane-keep, you’ll need to opt for models from LARIAT up as it is not offered as an option for XL or XLT. Rain sensing wipers are an additional option for a LARIAT but standard on a LIMITED.

Want to back up your trailer like a boss? The one package that isn’t standard even on the LIMITED is the Pro Trailer Backup Assist which allows even novice drivers to back their trailers up like a pro with one rotation of a knob.

2020 Ford F-150 Overview

The 2020 Ford F-150 comes in 7 different trim levels, each distinct and caters to a specific need from a work truck to move supplies from place to place, navigating the concrete jungle, off-road domination, all the bells and whistles to delight anyone looking for a big luxurious cruiser. Just keep in mind all the bells and whistles needed to delight any buyer comes at a price. These are available in a Regular cab, SuperCab, or SuperCrew with the option to have a bench in the front to allow for seating for 3.

It is worth noting that the SuperCrew is available on all 7 trim levels, SuperCab is available only on the XL, XLT, LARIAT, and RAPTOR. Regular Cab is available on two trims, XL and XLT. There are three options for bed length, 5.5′, 6.5, and 8′ beds to haul all the cargo or furniture you would ever need.

The starting MSRP for the base F-150 XL starts at $28,745 and goes up to over $67,735 for the LIMITED edition. The XL, XLT, and LARIAT come with new appearance packages to customize your F-150.

Ford F-150 XL

Exterior:

The Ford F-150 XL comes with 17 inch silver steel wheels, halogen headlights with the option to include fog lights, and a black two bar grille with black nostrils. A cargo lamp is standard on all models as well as daytime running lamps. It’s difficult to equate a sizable work vehicle like an F-150 to the word sporty but with all the black accents, it’s almost sport aggressive. If you want to get a truly sporty look to your truck, for 2020 Ford brings the XL has some cool appearance packages worth checking out.

The XL is one of two trim levels that come with an option for the Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew.

Interior:

Within the Dashboard of the 2020 Ford F-150 XL is a 2.3” productivity screen that comes standard. If like most you want to see what’s taking place within your vehicle without straining your eyes, there is the option to upgrade to a 4.2” screen.

SYNC, SYNC 3, or FordPass does not come standard with the XL but is available as an additional option.

There is no option for a heated steering wheel within the XL trim unfortunately, if you need that, an upgrade is in order folks!

Tech and Safety:

The 2020 Ford F-150 comes with a lot of awesome technology and safety features standard. It would be a lie to say there aren’t better redesigned pickup trucks on the market that make the F-150 feel outdated but rest easy, the 2021 is almost here to remedy that.

The 2020 model year F-150 comes with Ford Co-Pilot360, which comes standard with Automatic high beams, wiper activated headlamps, auto start/stop engine technology, curve control, rear view camera with dynamic hitch assist, etc. Even though this is the base model, once you hit the LARIAT trim level and up you get advanced features like lane keep assist.

Performance:

The beauty of the F-150, is you are not limited nor do you feel like you are missing out when you purchase a more affordable trim level. Purchasing the lower trims are almost encouraged by Ford with the variations that are offered. From all the body configurations to bed sizes. Choosing between a Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew or a 5.5, 6.5, or 8 foot bed. Then to top it all off you have the engine and drive-train options. If you need a big truck specifically to move heavy and long supplies, there is a bed length and engine with the power you need to get the job done!

This is very different from the 2020 Toyota RAV4 which comes with just two engines, one for the hybrid and one for non-hybrid trim levels.

The XL offers all but 2 of the previously mentioned engines (High-Output 3.5L V6 and the 3.0 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V6). You can choose the 4×2 or the 4×4 drive-train paired with the 10-speed electronic transmission and the engine of your choice for the vehicle of your dreams.

Ford F-150 XLT

Exterior:

The Ford F-150 XLT comes with 17 inch silver painted aluminum wheels, many other wheels are available as an option, up to 20 inches. Halogen headlights and fog lights, and a chrome two bar style with chrome nostril grille with black on the exterior and mesh. A cargo lamp is standard on all models as well as daytime running lamps.

The XLT is also one of two trim levels that come with an option for the Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew.

Interior:

Similar to the dashboard on the XL, the 2020 Ford F-150 XLT is a 2.3” productivity screen that comes standard. If like most you want to avoid straining your eyes, there is the option to upgrade to a 4.2” screen. Comes with single zone manual air conditioning to help keep your vehicle uniformly cooled on the inside. For dual zone, a step up to LARIAT is needed.

Unlike the XL, the XLT comes standard with SYNC 3 AND FordPass Connect.

The XLT comes with an option to upgrade the steering wheel from black urethane to black leather. Unfortunately you will need to scroll further down to find the heated steering wheel option.

Tech and Safety:

The same features that are provided on the XL are also found within the XLT. Unfortunately, there is no lane keep assist option to include with a XLT. If that’s a deal breaker for you as it is for most today, look further below!

Performance:

If you liked the power and range of options in terms of engines offered for the XL, the XLT has a new engine to throw into the mix, and yes, it’s a diesel. The XLT offers the same engines as the XL, the 2.7L V6, 3.3L V6, 3.5L V6, and 5.0L V8. Now there is a new engine to take into consideration, the 3.0L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel V6.

Ford F-150 LARIAT

Exterior:

The 2020 Ford F-150 LARIAT comes with 18 inch machined aluminum wheels with flash gray pockets and up to 20 inch options. Halogen headlights and fog lights, LED tailgate light, and chrome two bar style with four smaller bars as a grille with black on the exterior and mesh. A cargo lamp is standard on all models as well as daytime running lamps.

The LARIAT comes only as a SuperCab and SuperCrew.

Interior:

Unlike the XL and XLT trim levels that come with the 2.3″ productivity screen with a 4.2″ screen as an available option. The LARIAT comes with the same size screen that is found within the luxurious LIMITED trim. The 8″ productivity screen provides all the in dashboard real estate any driver could ask for. This beautiful productivity screen paired with dual zone electronic temperature control allows for a custom feel to the interior of the vehicle for both the driver and front passenger.

The 2020 Ford F-150 LARIAT comes standard with SYNC 3 AND FordPass Connect. Black leather wrapped steering wheel comes standard with, guess what, making this leather steering wheel heated as an option! No longer do you have to hold your hands over the air vents like an animal to cool them, they cool as you drive! Congrats my friend, you have stepped up in the world.

Tech and Safety:

With the step up to the LARIAT trim level you now have access to things like blind spot detection coming standard. This is optional only on the XLT and not available for the XL. Lane keep assist also comes standard with the LARIAT, which is a big deal! With a single additional available option for the LARIAT, you can now safely take long car rides across country with minimal effort.

Want to add in adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality? It’s available with the purchase of one additional option! Want to be able park in crazy tight spots or just see your vehicle on a 360 degree camera with split view display? Just another additional option away. One thing I would like to point out is, no matter what trim level you get, the pro trailer backup assist (which simplifies backing up your trailer immensely) will always be an additional option, even if you purchase the LIMITED.

Performance:

Unlike the XLT, you don’t gain an additional option when you make the step up from the previous trim level when you upgrade to LARIAT. You actually lose one, that one being the 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 Engine. With the options available for the LARIAT, it is a good idea to limit options that are almost redundant compared to others or don’t perform as efficiently.

The LARIAT trim offers the option to choose from the 2.7L V6, 3.0L Diesel V6, 3.5L V6, and 5.0L V8 engines.

Ford F-150 KING RANCH

Exterior:

The 2020 Ford F-150 KING RANCH comes with the same 18 inch machined aluminum wheels with flash gray pockets as the lariat but with Caribou King Ranch Logo Ornaments and two 20 inch options. Rather than halogen headlights and fog lights, the KING RANCH comes with Quad LED headlights and LED fog lights. A major upgrade from the halogens that come standard on the previous models. Now LED Box lighting comes standard as well as LED Mirror mounted spotlights.

The King Ranch is only available with the SuperCrew body style without an option for the smaller cab sizes.

Interior:

The KING RANCH comes with a 8″ productivity screen that provides all the in dashboard real estate any driver could ask for. Paired with dual zone electronic temperature control allows for a custom feel to the interior of the vehicle for both the driver and front passenger.

The 2020 Ford F-150 KING RANCH also comes standard with SYNC 3 AND FordPass Connect. You will not believe what comes standard now in the King Ranch! The KING RANCH comes standard with a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel with memory, a step up from the lower trims that come with manual tilt/telescoping and manual locking wheels. That’s not all, they also come with the infamous heated leather wrapped steering wheel! In the KING RANCH the leather wrapped steering wheel doesn’t come in black but mesa.

Tech and Safety:

Now that we are up a trim level from the LARIAT with the KING RANCH, you now how more options that come standard. One would be now the reverse sensing system comes standard as well as rain sensing wipers. Things like adaptive cruise control with stop and go and a 360 camera are still options that will have to be purchased.

Performance:

The trend from the XLT to the LARIAT continues. Upgrading to the 2020 Ford F-150 KING RANCH means losing an additional option for an engine. With the upgrade to the KING RANCH, you loose the option to have the 2.7L EcoBoost V6. At this price point I am assuming Ford came to the conclusion that fuel efficiency is the least of your worries.

The KING RANCH trim offers the option to choose from the 3.0L V6, 3.5L V6, and 5.0L V8 engines.

Ford F-150 RAPTOR

Exterior:

The 2020 Ford F-150 RAPTOR comes with the same 17 inch cast aluminum wheels with high-gloss machine face and magnetic painted pockets as the KING RANCH. There is only one other wheel available which is a 17 inch forged aluminum bead lock capable wheel. The RAPTOR also comes with the well known FORD block letter grille, an aggressive and unique aesthetic.

The Ford F-150 Raptor comes with Quad beam LED headlamps with black surround. The LED Box Lighting is an optional add on, most people using the RAPTOR probably won’t make much use or have a need for box lighting but if you do, it’s available. The mirror mounted spotlights are also an additional option. The RAPTOR comes with integrated maker lights.

The Raptor comes in a SuperCab and SuperCrew.

Interior:

The RAPTOR comes with a 4.2″ productivity screen with the option to upgrade to the 8″ productivity screen if the need arises or budget allows. The RAPTOR comes with the unique Ford performance aluminum scuff plates with the single zone manual air conditioning, automatic dual zone is an available option.

The 2020 Ford F-150 RAPTOR also comes standard with SYNC 3 AND FordPass Connect. A heated steering wheel is an available option for the RAPTOR, it comes with a sport style leather wrapped steering wheel with thumb pads and paddle shifters.

Tech and Safety:

The RAPTOR offers pretty much the same tech and functionality as the XLT with addition to trail control. Trail control is a functionality that behaves very similarly to cruise control. this is a cruise control for low traction off road terrain. On the 2020 Ford F-150 Raptor, Ford allows you to set the speed and the system manages the acceleration and braking by sending power to the wheels individually as needed. This is awesome maneuvering difficult terrain where all you have to do is focus on steering and the RAPTOR handles the rest.

Performance:

The 2020 Ford F-150 RAPTOR only comes with 4×4 and no 4×2 for very obvious reasons. To aid the off road capabilities of the RAPTOR, it also comes with the Torque-On-Demand Transfer case. The RAPTOR comes with only one engine, the same engine available on the LIMITED to provide all the power you need to conquer any terrain, the high-output 3.5L V6 EcoBoost.

Ford F-150 PLATINUM

Exterior:

The 2020 Ford F-150 PLATINUM rides on 22 inch polished aluminum wheels. Full suite of LED lights to illuminate the road as you roll this gorgeous hulking mass down the street. It comes with the same exterior lighting options that are also seen on the KING RANCH. The grille comes in satin chrome with a two bar style with satin chrome surround and silver mesh inserts.

The Ford F-150 Platinum is only available with as a SuperCrew and no option for the smaller cab sizes.

The PLATINUM comes with a 8″ productivity screen that provides all the in dashboard real estate any driver could ask for. Paired with dual zone electronic temperature control allows for a personalized feel to the interior of the vehicle for both the driver and front passenger.

The 2020 Ford F-150 PLATINUM comes standard with SYNC 3 AND FordPass Connect. The PLATINUM offers the same high end amenities and features found within the KING RANCH.

Tech and Safety:

Choosing the PLATINUM feels a lot like the KING RANCH when it comes to the tech available. Other than a couple cosmetic changes, the PLATINUM is almost the same vehicle. It comes with the same suite of safety features offered within the KING RANCH with a bunch of unique cosmetic add-ons.

Performance:

The PLATINUM comes with the same engine options as the KING RANCH, the 3.0L Power Stroke V6, 3.5L EcoBoost V6, and the 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 Engine. These options are all the fuel efficiency and power you would ever need with this trim. While it’s unlikely that you are using a Platinum Ford F-150 for work, it is more than capable of doing so.

Conclusion

When it comes to the 2020 Ford F-150, it is hard to deny the value this purchase provides. From a vehicle that can be customized for the most rigorous work need, to an extremely comfortable people mover with no middle seat hump going across the bottom of the back row. If you haven’t had to ride while sitting in the middle seat of a vehicle with a hump, your input on whether it is that big a deal is not welcomed. This is not only for the comfort of the passenger riding, but also gives you space to load the bed and the back row if needed.

The read window are power open and close, reducing the need for you to have to reach back and open it. Unless you have the reach for it, you will not be able to reach the window from the front seat of a SuperCrew. For saving the vast majority of Americans that love buying over-sized vehicles, good looking out Ford!

Very few vehicles can be seen on the road and you immediately know what is rolling down the street toward you, the F-150 is definitely one of those vehicles. The main one being the iconic “Ford” in block letters written across the grille for the RAPTOR.

Ford understands their main demographic tends to be the working man looking to purchase an effective work vehicle on a specific budget and they cater to them. The base XL and XLT trim levels provide the most flexibility and working output than the other trim levels allowing you to choose from numerous engines. While they don’t come with all the functionality you would love to see in your vehicle in terms of available tech, they are never a bad buy.

It is impossible to overlook the damage other automotive manufactures have done in this vehicle segment by the likes of RAM and Chevy. Rest assured, while the 2020 Ford F-150 is a definite gem, the 2021 Ford F-150 which is soon to be released following this articles publication, will remedy the situation.

Please read and look further into each trim level before purchasing and ask the necessary questions. Is it good enough to buy a KING RANCH and aftermarket wheels to compensate for what you would get with the PLATINUM? Or do you want that customized fresh from the factory feel?
